Follow-Up of the TCB Project in Ghana – IT Equipment and Maintenance

Background

The TCB working group of the Erlangen Regional Group continues its successful efforts in Ghana. Following the “Teaching Computer Basics” (TCB) project in Sunyani in April 2024, where a school was equipped with infrastructure for computer education, we are now taking the next step.

Sunyani is a city in central Ghana with approximately 74,000 inhabitants. Despite progress in the education sector, over 90% of schools still lack the opportunity to offer computer education. In collaboration with our local project partners, we have decided to equip the St. Anselm Basic School with laptops and the necessary accessories.

In the past, TCB has successfully implemented several projects in the small town of Agona Abodom. Here, we aim to further strengthen our relationships with local partners and lay the foundation for future projects.

Project Objectives

1. Sustainable Evaluation and Exchange: A team from the Erlangen Regional Group will travel to Agona Abodom to engage with teachers and local TCB members to discuss past experiences and identify areas for improvement.

2. Expansion of the Project in Sunyani: Building on the insights gained, the successful concept will be implemented in additional schools in Sunyani. The goal is to equip one school with functional computer rooms and enable teachers to provide practical IT education.

Implementation

Initially, laptop donations are being collected at the University of Erlangen. The donated laptops are being prepared for use in the project by securely deleting all existing data and installing a new operating system. The laptops will be shipped to Accra and then transported to Sunyani.

Additionally, workshops for teachers in Sunyani are being prepared, focusing on either basic or advanced computer skills.

In September 2025, a project team with two volunteers from the Erlangen Regional Group will travel to Ghana. In Sunyani, the pre-shipped laptops will be set up, and the workshops will be conducted. These activities will be carried out in close cooperation with TeoG volunteers from Ghana. Subsequently, in Agona Abodom, the outcomes of previous projects will be reviewed, and improvements and future projects will be discussed with local stakeholders. Where necessary and feasible, defective laptops will be repaired. The project will last a total of two weeks.
